Gateway Financial
Our first principle

Simplicity

The payments industry runs on confusion. We treat simplicity as a deliberate discipline, in your pricing, your hardware, and your statement.

Here is an uncomfortable truth about the payments industry: most of the complexity is on purpose. Confusing statements, three-tier pricing, fees with official-sounding names, jargon that makes you feel like you should already understand it, none of that is an accident. It is the moat. A confused merchant does not compare, does not negotiate, and does not switch. So we built Gateway around the opposite bet: that being genuinely easy to understand is a competitive advantage, not a limitation.

1The problem

Complexity is the business model

Ask yourself why a merchant statement is so hard to read. It is not a technical limitation, plenty of industries send clear bills. It is a choice. The harder it is to find your true cost, the longer you overpay without noticing. The classic tools of manufactured confusion:

  • Tiered pricing that sorts your sales into “qualified” and “non-qualified” buckets you can never audit.
  • Junk fees with names like “regulatory recovery” that sound mandatory and are pure margin.
  • Teaser rates on the ad that almost none of your real transactions ever get.
  • Jargon that makes asking a basic question feel embarrassing.

The tell

If you cannot compute what you actually pay from your own statement in two minutes, that is not your shortcoming. It was designed that way. The fix is on the provider, not you.
2Our standard

What “simple” actually means here

Simplicity is not a vibe; it is a set of concrete defaults. Here is the complicated way versus the way we do it.

The complicated wayThe Gateway way
A teaser rate you can never reconcileOne honest effective rate, all-in
Qualified / mid / non-qualified tiersTransparent interchange-plus
A statement built to confusePlain-English line items you can read
Junk fees with official namesNo junk fees, itemized add-ons only
Hardware you configure yourselfEquipment pre-programmed, plug and play
A call-center mazeOne human who knows your account
3The proof

One number you can hold us to

The simplest, most honest measure in all of payments is your effective rate: total fees divided by total volume. It rolls every interchange tier, assessment, and junk fee into one comparable percentage. We lead with it because it is the one number that cannot be spun, and we would rather be judged by it than hide behind a teaser.

We wrote the whole method out so you can do it without us. See How to read a merchant statement.
4A distinction

Simple is not the same as basic

This is the part people miss. Behind a simple experience, we run genuinely sophisticated machinery: Level 2 and 3 interchange optimization, fraud and chargeback tooling, multi-bank redundancy for high-risk accounts. The complexity does not disappear, it just becomes our job instead of yours. You get the lower cost and the protection; you do not get the headache.

The bottom line

  • Most payments complexity is deliberate, because confused merchants overpay.
  • Simplicity here is concrete: one effective rate, plain statements, interchange-plus, no junk fees.
  • Equipment ships pre-programmed and you reach one human, not a call-center maze.
  • We lead with your true effective rate because it is the one number that cannot be spun.
  • Simple is the experience, not the capability, the sophisticated work just becomes our job.

Common questions

No. Simple and cheap are not opposites; complexity is usually where the overcharging hides. We price on transparent interchange-plus, which is both the simplest model to read and, for most established businesses, the least expensive.
